PC Turns On But No Display? Common Causes & What to Check

Quick answer

When a PC has power (fans spin, lights come on) but the monitor stays black, the cause is usually one of a handful of things: the monitor or its input selection, the display cable, the graphics card connection, RAM seating, power connections, a BIOS/POST issue, or a CPU/motherboard fault. Work from the outside in, start with the simplest external checks (monitor, input, cable) before ever opening the case.

1. Safe first checks (no tools needed)

Most “no display” problems are solved without opening the computer. Run through these in order:

  1. Confirm the monitor itself has power (its own light/logo appears when turned on).
  2. Verify the monitor is set to the correct input (HDMI 1/2, DisplayPort, etc.).
  3. Reseat both ends of the display cable, or swap in a different HDMI/DisplayPort cable.
  4. Test the PC on another monitor or TV if you have one available.
  5. Make sure the cable is plugged into the graphics card's output, not the motherboard port, if the PC has a dedicated GPU.
  6. Fully shut the PC down (hold the power button ~10 seconds), then power it back on.
  7. Disconnect unnecessary USB devices, docks, and second monitors, then try again.

If a different monitor or cable brings the picture back, you've found the culprit. If the screen is still black after these steps, it's time to look inside.

2. Checking the graphics card (GPU)

⚠️ Before opening the case: shut the PC down, switch off the power supply, and unplug the power cable. Touch a bare metal part of the case to discharge static before handling parts.

Many desktops have two sets of video outputs: the ones on the motherboard (integrated graphics) and the ones on a dedicated graphics card lower down. If your PC has a dedicated GPU, the cable must be plugged into the card, not the motherboard, or you may get no signal.

  • Confirm the graphics card is fully seated in its PCIe slot (it should sit level, with the retention clip engaged).
  • Check that any required PCIe power connectors (6/8-pin or 12VHPWR) are firmly attached, a partially connected GPU can stop the display.
  • If you're comfortable, try the motherboard's video output or a different port to see whether the picture returns.

3. Checking the RAM

Improperly seated or failing memory is one of the most common reasons a PC powers on but never completes POST, so nothing ever reaches the screen. High-level, safe steps:

  • Shut down and disconnect power first (same safety steps as above).
  • Press each memory stick firmly back into its slot until both clips click, reseating alone fixes many cases.
  • If it still won't display, test one stick at a time in the slot your motherboard manual recommends, to identify a bad stick or slot.

Stick to reseating and swapping modules. Don't attempt electrical repairs or force components, that risks further damage.

4. POST / debug indicators

Not every motherboard reports problems the same way, so check your specific model's manual. Depending on the board you may see:

  • Debug LEDs labelled CPU, DRAM, VGA, and BOOT that light up at the stage where the boot process stalls.
  • A two-digit POST code display.
  • Beep codes from a speaker header.

As a general guide: a stuck CPU light points toward the processor or its power; DRAM points to memory; VGA points to the graphics card; and BOOT points to the drive/OS. These are starting points, not guarantees, always confirm against your board's documentation.

5. BIOS / CMOS issues

Occasionally a saved BIOS setting, memory tuning profile (like XMP/EXPO), a firmware change, or newly installed hardware can leave a system unable to display. Clearing the BIOS back to defaults (a “CMOS reset”) sometimes restores it. Because the method differs by board, a jumper, a button, or briefly removing the coin battery, follow your motherboard manufacturer's exact instructions rather than a generic procedure.

6. When it may be a hardware failure

If the basics don't help, an actual component may have failed. Common possibilities include a failed GPU, failed RAM, a power-supply (PSU) issue, a motherboard failure, or a CPU/socket problem. Pinning down which one usually requires swapping in known-good parts one at a time, that's how a technician isolates the faulty component with confidence.

7. When to stop and get it diagnosed

It's time to hand it to a professional if:

  • You're not comfortable opening the PC or handling components.
  • There's a burning smell or visible damage (bulging capacitors, scorch marks), stop and unplug it immediately.
  • Debug LEDs or POST/beep codes persist after the checks above.
  • The system still won't POST once you've verified monitor, cable, GPU, and RAM.
  • Accurate diagnosis would require swapping in known-good parts you don't have.
